Saving Your Sanity While Prepping & Packing to Move

Spread the love

Last week on the blog I shared some tips for staying sane while prepping and packing for a move. This
week let’s take a deeper dive. These are things I will be doing in the near future when we’ve sold our
current home and found where we are moving next. While some of these things seem like just common
sense as you’re reading this, when you’re in the midst of All. The. Things., common sense can fly out the
window and these suggestions will come in handy!

Pack the things you use the least first.

“I don’t know where to start!” You’ll find yourself thinking this, maybe even saying it aloud. But it’s
actually pretty simple. Room by room, start with the stuff you use least for day-to-day living. Artwork on
the walls, décor items, books, off-season clothing. By doing this you give yourself some extra time for
using the items you actually need while still packing.

Pack by room and objects in each room.

Start with specifically labeled boxes for each room, as well as types of objects in each room. For
example, start with a box labeled “Bathroom – Towels”; Bathroom – Toiletries”, etc. If you don’t have
enough items to fill a box, try grouping similar items. For example, in the kitchen you might not be able
to fill a box completely with pots and pans, but you could add cooking utensils to that box to fill it up.

Excuse my French, but don’t half-ass things.

You might be tempted to just throw things into boxes, because the whole packing thing is a hassle,
right? Don’t do it!! Just don’t. Remember what I said about putting away Christmas lights last week?!?
With the right packing, when arrive at your new digs you can just move boxes to the right room or area,
and won’t have to find socks stuffed into a box with kitchen items.

Oh, my aching back!

Save your back by using the correct box sizes for items. Rule of thumb: the heavier the items, the
smaller the boxes should be. This saves your back when lifting the boxes! Dishes, electronics, books go
into smaller boxes, and lighter items like pillows, linens, etc. go into the larger boxes.

Peek-a-Boo.

Don’t play hide and seek at your new place! It’s tempting to pack smaller items inside larger ones. For
example, kitchen silverware inside the larger pots and pans. As long as you do this in a manner that
keeps items together by room, it’s a good idea. However, you don’t want to spend days looking for your
laptop charger, only to find that you stuffed inside the box with kitchen towels! So stick with the “similar
items together” rule and you should be fine.

Decide if you’re moving yourself, or hiring a moving company.

This is probably the one thing you can do ahead of time to stay sane. If you have a large home with lots
of furniture like we do, a professional moving company is the only wise choice. When we were younger,
we would perhaps have attempted to move a lot of our stuff ourselves. But at this stage of life, it no
longer makes sense.

If you plan to use a professional moving company, start by getting quotes from three movers. You
should do this at least 4-5 weeks ahead of your planned move date, to ensure the moving company has
the availability on the date(s) you need them. What could be worse than not being able to secure a
moving company when you need them?

Be ready for the actual move day.

This is the moment when all your planning and organizing pays off! In a perfect world, you might have
gotten everything packed and ready for the movers, and you go to a hotel to spend the night before the
move. But in the real world, that’s probably not what happens. Out plan is to have everything ready to
go, and sleep in our bed one last time in this house. Hopefully we won’t be throwing things into last
minute boxes as the truck pulls up.

Next comes the yard sale.

Next week on the blog we’ll cover the yard sale. We’ve already started going through and identifying
things that will go into the yard sale. We hope to get rid of all kinds of things, and what doesn’t sell will
go to Goodwill. It should be a good yard sale, because we are preparing and getting the word out, and
have lots of great stuff to put in the sale.
Every week I will be sharing our moving/downsizing journey with you, and lessons learned along the
way. I’m honored that you are coming along on this journey with me, and hope you will tell your friends
to follow along too.
